In addition to our Sunday services we
meet informally in smaller groups during the week. We
have three groups – two that meet on Tuesday evening
and one on Thursday evening, all from 7:45pm to 9:00pm
with tea/coffee time afterwards.
Usually we follow up the teaching given
on the previous Sunday – clarifying understanding
and making sure that the word is well applied to our
lives. We usually find that there is plenty to discuss
– especially as we try to work out the practical
implications of God’s word for daily living.
In October and November we are doing
something a bit different by following a course to help
us get familiar with and more eager to read God's Word,
the Bible. This is what it says about itself:
'How sweet are your words to my
taste,' says the psalmist about the law of God,
'sweeter than honey to my mouth.' Most Christians
would like to say Amen, but somehow it doesn't
always feel this way.
Reading the Bible often feels
like our attempts to have regular exercise - a
healthy chore we know we should fit in, but which
is hard to manage among everything else, and ends
up slipping off the agenda.
Whatever your current Bible reading
habits (or lack of them), and whatever your level
of knowledge and confidence, Six
Steps To Reading Your Bible will help you
make progress in getting into your Bible.
The course will help us:
- Become familiar with the basic
shape and nature of the Bible
- Be motivated to read the Bible for ourselves
- Learn how to apply basic reading skills to the
Bible
- Learn how to apply a Bible passage to your life
- Understand how the whole message of the Bible
hangs together and centers on Jesus
- Benefit from the encouragement and experience
of others, as we work together in learning to
read the Bible
Let's be praying it does all that!
Housegroups conclude with a prayer time.
As well as encouraging and supporting one another through
our prayers we seek God’s guidance in every aspect
of church life. In this way we are able to bring many
individual needs before the Lord who promises to hear
the prayers of his people. Once each month the groups
combine, so that the whole church can gather for thanksgiving
and intercession.
