CY Jesus Matters

Bernie didn’t relate to Anna properly because he didn’t know that she was a famous actress.

In order to relate to Jesus properly we have to get his identity right.
So w
ho is Jesus?
Is he a good moral teacher, a compassionate miracle worker, a great figure of history or what?

We've already seen that Mark’s verdict goes far beyond that.
Look again at Mark chapter 1, verse 1: ‘The beginning of the gospel about Jesus Christ, the Son of God.’

Mark is determined that we should see Jesus as a figure with divine authority: the son of God.

What Mark does over the first few chapters of his Gospel is stack up layer after layer of evidence to justify his claim that Jesus is the Son of God and the Lord.

Jesus has the power and authority . . .

• to teach

• over sickness

• over nature

• over death

• to forgive sins

And as he teaches, calms the storm, raises the dead, heals the sick and forgives sins he acts in God’s world with God’s authority.

He acts as if he is the ruler in God’s world.

Of course, if this is true, then it’s not just an abstract idea. It gets very personal. Do I recognise who he is?

Will I recognise that he is my Lord and teacher, whether I like it or not?

Do I recognise that he has authority over my death, whether I like it or not?

Do I see that he has the authority to forgive my sin or leave it unforgiven?

These are good questions to ask because if Jesus is who he claims to be then it is a scandal that we haven’t lived under his authority, for he gives us each breath. If he is the King then we are guilty of treason.

So the ultimate question is, if I believe this, will I submit to him?

And that of course, comes down to who do you think He is?

Just a bloke ... a carpenter ... maybe someone with some interesting ideals ....?
Well, if that is who He is then He is irrelevant to you and me today in Tipton.

But if He is more ... if He is God's Son, then like Bernie we could be in danger of messing up and missing out (except in a more serious way than Bernie's embarrasment in front of Juila Roberts).

But also, like Bernie, we could have something amazing come into our lives - not a Hollywood actress, but our creator Himself come near ... one who seems determined to put a broken, painful world back together!
That definitely sounds like good news not to miss!
