10 - the one about sideways glances

Do not covet
[Exodus 20:17]*

* Coveting is wanting something that is not for you.

Coveting is a serious heart problem:

  • it destroys our trust and love for God
  • it eats away at our love for others
  • and it can lead to the destruction of the world around us [remember the LORAX?].

What causes fights and quarrels among you? Don’t they come from your desires that battle within you? 2 You desire but do not have, so you kill. You covet but you cannot get what you want, so you quarrel and fight. You do not have because you do not ask God. 3 When you ask, you do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, that you may spend what you get on your pleasures. James 4:1-3

The seed falling among the thorns refers to someone who hears the word, but the worries of this life and the deceitfulness of wealth choke the word, making it unfruitful. Matthew 13:22

Coveting is a serious heart problem that only Christ can heal

  • by His death on the cross[1 Corinthians 6:9-11]
  • through His Spirit [Galatians 5:19-24]
  • in the relationships we have with others in Jesus’ church [Hebrews 10:24]

daily remember the blessings you do have and thank God for them [1 Timothy 4:4-5; 6:6-8]

get real about the responsibility what you do have brings [Luke 12:48]

think ... in 5 years time will I still want that thing which I so badly want now? {Or in 20 years? Or in 100 years? Or in eternity !!??}

The things around us and the desires for them are good.
Water is good for a ship. It’s needed to sail on. But when water gets into the ship, that’s when the problems start.
We all naturally covet things that are not for us. But in Christ we can all be forgiven and changed (bit by bit) to be those who gladly trust our heavenly Father with our needs and who love to help others with theirs.
